B is for Butterfly

Bug is 30 months old
I wanted to do an art project associated with the letter B
Explore new artistic medium

Bug colored coffee filters using washable markers. (NOTE: put something under the coffee filter!, luckily the markers are washable). I encouraged her to use many colors and we both colored a lot!

Then I had her use the spray bottle & got the coffee filters quite wet. I hung them on the edge of the counter to dry. (having a drying plan in place would be helpful... I didn't, so I improvised by using scotch tape and paper towels under to catch the dripping)

Let them dry... it might take a while.

The original project said to squish the filters down the middle with clothes pins, but I don't actually have any clothes pins (weird, I know), but I do have pipe cleaners. So...

1. "Accordion fold" the filters
2. Fold one pipe cleaner in half and put the filter in between the two folded pieces about half way up
3. Twist the filter above and below the filter and make the loose ends into antenna
4. Fan the filter out to look like butterfly wings

It was too hard for Bug to do this, so I did it for her. She instead had a lot of fun making the butterflies fly!

Peanut liked them too! She watched Bug fly them around for about 5 minutes! (so funny) Here I gave Peanut a paper towel to chew on instead of the coffee filter with marker on it. :)

To display them, I poked bent paper clips through the paper on the fridge.

I had Bug hang them up on the fridge door. She had a lot of fun doing this. It was a little tough, but she did well!

Review:
I really liked this project! I'll definitely do this again and I'll keep this art form in mind for other projects! Bug had a ton of fun & was able to do most of it alone. She would have had fun with the pipe cleaner, but it wouldn't have been a butterfly. (That would have been fine, but I made a decision to skip the drama).
